Sayoc Combat Choreography (SCC) debuted in 2003, led by Sayoc Tuhons Rafael Kayanan and Thomas Kier. Developed from the Sayoc Kali system, SCC brought a new level of realism and precision to cinematic combat, most notably showcased in the film The Hunted, starring Benicio del Toro and Tommy Lee Jones.
Critics immediately took notice. Roger Ebert described the film as “far more intense than you may be expecting… a knife shown to be as brutal as a knife could ever be.” Walter Chaw of Film Freak Central praised its authenticity, noting that The Hunted captured “the immediate, exhausting, draining physical work of fighting.” Tom Long of the Detroit News called its climactic scene “one of the bloodiest onscreen knife fights in history.”
The debut of SCC marked a turning point in how hand-to-hand combat and edged weapon dynamics were portrayed on screen. What audiences witnessed wasn’t choreography for spectacle, but movement rooted in real-world understanding of timing, intent, and consequence.
