On March 7, 2013, an era in U.S. military history comes to a close with the death of Colonel Edwin Ramsey in Los Angeles, California.

On January 16, 1942, Colonel Edwin Ramsey led a troop of the 26th Mounted Cavalry Regiment in a successful attack on the Japanese-held town of Morong on the West Coast of Bataan.

When the U.S. forces on Bataan surrendered to the Japanese, Ramsey refused to give up and escaped into the jungle where, over the next three years, he organized Filipino guerrilla forces that eventually numbered 40,000 fighters.

General Douglas MacArthur personally awarded Ramsey the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star and Purple Heart for the success of his guerrilla organization, his heroism and his combat wounds.

He has been honored by presidents and recognized by the U.S. Army’s Special Forces, which to a large degree are modeled after Ramsey’s guerrilla organization in World War II. His wartime exploits are preserved in the book Lieutenant Ramsey’s War and the documentary film “Forgotten Soldiers.”

Tuhon Jimmie Sayoc recently completed a successful two day seminar with the Sayoc Kali Training Group at Tribal Tactics in North Hollywood, CA. The first day of the seminar started out with Tuhon Jimmie instructing the participants in the Sayoc methods of the whip.

Participants went through warming up, stretching with the whip – orbiting, projecting, body-wrapping, and the basic pops and cuts. Some students who had never trained with a whip till that morning were soon controlling the whip with confidence. Tuhon Jimmie explained the use of the whip as a bridging tool for all the other weapons that we use in the arts we study. The second part of the day was focused on the Sayoc Fighting System/Sayoc Guard and it’s use and training. Students trained the guard emphasizing targeting, range, multiple planes and against multiple attackers. Needless to say, each student left the seminar with a lot of material.

For those who didn’t know, Guro Daniel Arca Inosanto is a Filipino-American martial arts instructor from California who is best known as a student of the late Bruce Lee and renowned authority on Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Martial Arts, and Silat. The city of Ansonia, CT recently held a ceremony to honor Guro Rich’s father, Alfonso Smith.

Alfonso, also known as “Butch” or “Smitty,” has been a long-time youth sports-league volunteer and Ansonia Recreation Commission member. The 89 year old WWII Veteran was presented with a plaque and a youth league jacket by Mayor James Della Volpe who also named that day as Al Smith Day!
